Mukunda Mukunda, Krishna

My late grandmother used to tell a story of how our family deity, Krishna saved her great grandparents' herd of cows from thieves. Apparently the thieves who were trying to get away with the cows suddenly had their feet frozen to the ground till the next morning when they were caught.

Though we were not staunch in our prayers, the faith was always there. I have heard my grandma singing her favourite Krishna tune.. 'Kakkai siriginilae, nanthalala' many a times 5am in the morning as she prepared breakfast. Krishna had always been a main deity in many Hindu households especially of northern origin except ours is not.

But i grew up on a childhood staple of Amar Chitra Katha and later vedic books. I loved how he rescued his many beloved, his image as that eternal lover and the cowherd with that peacock feather in his head..and so handsome too...what a wonderfully romantic notion for a deity. And later my teens, I developed a deeper understanding and found his teachings to Arjuna in Gita totally amazing. I could see why Mirabai lost her soul to him. Probably why my mom chose to name me Radha too, at first.

Anyway, recently I heard this new song, Mukunda Mukunda from the latest movie, Dasavatharam, it is so wonderfully sweet...I'm sure my late grandma would agree too.
