If a dining room was small, installing a full lenghth wall mirror and hvg plenty of sparkly lighting reflect off it might just do the trick, creating tt illusion of space. Hvg little inbuilts also are the top in maximising storage. Careful with young children tho as they may knock into mirrors or even walk thru it.
Preferably a window would be divine but Malaysian obsession with linked homes that is light and space challenged lacks in creating a holistic home but many make do.
And make sure there are plenty of space from the walls so you can carry around your vacuum. Be advisable to avoid fabric on chairs and carpet in our hot and humid weather. Makes great breeding ground for fungus and such.
A nice panelling would solve immediate problems of toddlers crashing into mirrors or people kicking into corners. A good solid table and chair set anchors a dining room well.
