"Chapatis or pasta for dinner?" i called him at work. "Pasta's too heavy. Make me chapati and potatoes." he said. "Ok, shall i use the calorie free potatoes you bought the other day?" I asked. "huh?" Old habits die hard. How many times hv we realised we are hooked on something by way of habit and familiarity? For a man who was raised on stringhoppers, potatoes, eggs and curries from the time he was 5 month old, i reckon it must be impossible to actually feel any better eating anything else. So potatoes it will be. But i need to improvise.

There you go, four good sized potatoes, a big onion, garlic and plenty of green chillies that actually make the dish. Curry leaves never made their way from the market.

All chopped up, a sprinkling of cumin and mustard seeds. A teaspoon of corn oil for a light coat, saute 3 mins.

Combine a litre of water, a teaspoon turmeric powder and salt. Let cook till potatoes soften to a fluffy texture. Half a teaspoon of lime juice right before you lift off.

There mushy potatoes Indians so love, a humble dish but not to be underestimated.

Serve it with chapati, poori or tosai or a side dish to rice though in this modern convenient world where we dont really do too much of physical work, it be wise to opt out. copyrights reserved.
