It was homophobia that refrained me from watching Brokeback Mountain when it was first released nearly 5 years ago and won many awards since. What was a Chinese director Ang Lee doing with American West anyway. The soundtrack was great and the views magnificient. The homosexual theme filled me with the same distaste i remember witnessing a couple of lesbians french kissing in a chapel during my (Main Convent) catholic convent girls school days in Ipoh. This was followed by another two years as a sixth form co-ed in an otherwise all boys schools ,ST Michael Institution, where i got to see how the 'straights' loathed the 'queers'.
Then I watched 10 things I Hate About You and was really smitten by Heath Ledger. A quick google brought shocking news. This enigmatic actor died in January 2008 at a tender age of 29. I had to see Brokeback Mountain, at least for him.
I did squirm during the make out scenes but somewhere through the middle of the film, suddenly i felt that those two cowboys locked in a passionate embrace against the backdrop of the mountains was the most beautiful sight of lovers i had ever seen. I especially loved Ledger's character that totally metamorphed from the Ledger of 10 things. How sad he died. Both leading men had explosive chemistry that even when watching them interviewed on Oprah later, you almost can believe those two were actually 'together'. Whatever they did, they cured me of homophobic for good! I'll never look at a gay couples the same way again. 'I swear..'!
