Roti Canai

Roti Kosong -as it is

Murtabak -roti layered with spicy meat filling
A meal on its own

Roti telur - splashed on with egg

Roti pisang- layered with slices of banana and kaya
The sweet alternative that is meant to be shared.

The woman in business suit sits in the latest bistro version of mamak shop, picks up her fork and spoon (yes, spoon) and daintily tears a small piece of roti, dips it lightly into the curry almost without touching it and with careful precision places her between her glossy, coloured lips ... and chews and chews on it!

Man, there was something totally wrong with the whole picture!

This is no way u treat a roti canai!

U tear a generous piece with ur fingers, dunk into a mixture of curry and ikan bilis sambal, rolled it around and stuff it into ur mouth .. munch.. munch.. and wash it down with Teh Tarik! Repeat again and again and again. U lick ur fingers and probably that extra curry about to dribble down ur chin. 7 mins all it takes to finish one! Food that is meant to be eaten with wanton abandonment of all things manners.

And yes, dump the bistros.. look for that corner stall under a a tree for the whole experience!
