April 14th normally marks the New Year in Tamil calendar. Days before the house is turned inside out, cleaned, scrubbed and old stuff are thrown out. Silver ware, bronze are polished til they gleam. Then banana trees, mango leaves, kolam and other new stuff are used to decorate the house. Vegetarian food is prepared that fulfills the 6 tastes requirement. The richer the better. Sweets are a must for a sweet beginning. New clothings. And on the day, early dawn, pooja is offered to the favourite deity. And then it is eat, dance and be merry!
Puthandu Valthukal!
